Dimension Sets

Overview

Dimension Sets enable platform administrators to define a specific sets of relevant dimensions for usersin your account. This helps simplify the filtering and group-by experience, especially for users who are not FinOps experts, by highlighting only the most important and commonly used dimensions.

A Dimension is any MegaBill key retrieved from a native cost integration or created manually as a Virtual Tag. A Dimension Set is a group of dimensions that share a common business context. It can be created by Finout by default or customized manually by the platform admin, who selects which dimensions to enable and defines their order. Dimension Sets let you create customized MegaBill configurations per account, each with a specific list and order of dimensions. You can define which dimensions are active, arrange them as needed, and set a Primary Set to streamline filtering and grouping across Finout.

Finout currently supports two dimension sets: All Dimensions and Primary Dimensions.

The All Dimensions set includes the full list of available dimensions, providing users with complete visibility and access to every data point in MegaBill. It serves as the default set when no Primary Dimensions set is configured.

The Primary Dimensions set is fully customizable and can be created and managed by a platform administrator. It is designed to support users who aren’t FinOps experts and need a simplified, business-focused way to analyze data. By highlighting only the most relevant dimensions, it helps teams focus on what matters most without being overwhelmed by unnecessary options.

Note: Currently, platform administrators can create only a single set , called the Primary Dimension set.

How can I use Dimension Sets?

Dimension Sets define which dimensions are available for selection and in what order—shaping the user experience by surfacing only the most relevant data. They are applied to Basic Filters, Advanced Filters, and Group By components throughout Finout, ensuring consistent and streamlined filtering and grouping across all areas where these controls appear.

You can use the Dimension Set functionality in the following locations:

  • MegaBill

  • Widgets

  • Financial Plans

  • Resources

  • Data Explorer

  • CostGuard

  • My Commitments

  • Anomalies

  • Reports

  • Governance

When a Primary Dimension Set is configured, it displays the specific dimensions and order you’ve defined.

If you want to use a dimension that isn’t included in the Primary Set, you can enable All to view all available dimensions.

Dimension Sets Configuration

  3. Disable the virtual tags or cost centers that you don't want to appear in the primary dimension.

  4. Additionally, disable specific dimensions within the virtual tag or cost center that you kept enabled. You can also click Expand All to view all sub-dimensions.

  5. Drag and drop cost centers and their dimensions to arrange them in the order you want them to appear.

  6. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save. The Primary Dimension is saved.

  7. Enable the Primary Dimension set for specific users in your account by sending a list of user emails to Finout Support at [email protected]. Result: The primary dimension that was created will be default when using Filters and Group By throughout Finout.
